Block printing I: Masonite-cut

Spending some time at my parents house. No woodwork yet this summer but I've wiped the dust off my old proof press and set it up in the garage. I've used it mostly for small lino cuts earlier but now I wanted to do something larger. I also wanted to use non conventional tools for creating the shapes for the block. Tools like band saw, regular drills and  the "chisel-drill".  A fantastic device that makes square holes. No I'm not kidding, see picture below! I picked masonite board as my material for the block. It worked fine with the flying flaming ape-scull where I used mostly the band saw (I have to find out a way to make the colors align better though). But  not so well with the big ship where i had to  use normal woodcutting tools for some of the details. The masonite is  quite hard on the surface but soft and cardboard like underneath, which makes it fragile. And the water soluble color I'm using makes the masonite swell. Maybe I can find something to harden it with once it's cut? Otherwise I don't think it will last for many prints. Some varnish maybe? Or oil?

The test prints are approx. 30 x 60 cm.

Mythology

I'm illustrating a spread about Greek mythology this week. A dear subject for me - strong characters, cool clothes and every now and then - an occasional monster. Here's a favourite: Hades, the god of the underworld with his three-headed dog Cerberus.

It's the glorious digital era when anyone can be an international recording artist, even your regular children's book illustrator from the deep woods of Sweden.

Another camera

Yes it's that time again: a good friend who's also a photographer is turning 50 and thus I make a wooden camera. Stefan and me had this thing for a simple plastic camera from the 50's called Agfa Clack some twenty years ago so this piece has a slight reminiscence of that.

Sci-Fi Art I

I went down-hill skiing a few weeks ago and the sight of the futuristic and jet engine looking snow guns made me want to go into Moebius-land. Strange, epic sized constructions in a desert landscape…  Is there snow guns on Mars?

Digital Painting

I'm trying to apply my painting-style to photoshop. Here's a recent example, a stone-age huntress for a school-book in history. I like the ability to endlessly change my mind and try new stuff but that also make it just as time-consuming as traditional painting.

The Odin Family

Here's a "family portrait" of some characters  from Scandinavian mythology. I'm generally quite fond of doing historical stuff but with the mythology dimension added it's even more fun. Mainly because it allows You some freedom in the details. Odin's winged helmet for example, is of course not historical accurate, it belongs more in a Wagner opera, but it looks cool.
